Not Out of the Woods Yet (Sat May 29, 1:30pm)

Mom is feeling MUCH better. She has had two good nights where she got plenty of sleep, and she has had no syncopes since stopping the Toprol last Wednesday afternoon. She is back to her normal self, chatting and doing things and cheerfully talking on the phone.

But I have a nagging little worry in the back of my mind that makes me think she is not out of the woods just yet. Yesterday Dr. Kubac said that the reason she had been on Toprol was to slow down her heart because it had been racing. Yesterday when his assistant Shonna took mom's pulse it was relatively slow at 48, but Kubac also told us that there was probably still some Toprol in her system (which is why he wants to wait till next Tuesday for the next Holter monitor, when all the Toprol should be gone).

Early this morning mom mentioned that she was going to keep an eye on her pulse, because she took it first thing this morning and it was in the 90s. A little while ago I asked her if we could take her pulse again, and she said that she already knew that it was racing. So we sat down, and she counted while I timed for 60 seconds. Again it was in the 90s, plus she said that she also detected a couple of skipped beats.

I think we need to watch her closely over the next couple days, because she is no longer on the Toprol to slow down her heart. In the 24 hours since yesterday it went from 48 beats per minute to around 90 beats per minute. This is the scenario that Dr. Kubac mentioned yesterday...the only way to slow a racing heart is drugs, and then the pacemaker makes sure that things don't slow down TOO far. Mom said that she is pretty sure he is going to recommend the pacemaker, and I bet she is right about that.
