Mom Evangelizes Hospice (Sun, 20 Mar, 2011)

Mom has been worrying about a friend of hers at Rocky Point. The woman is two years younger than mom, and she has cancer. She doesn't have any family members to take care of her, and apparently she doesn't have much contact with "the outside world" other than someone coming to do her house cleaning once every two weeks.

As soon as mom got signed up for High Desert Hospice and realized how much she likes it, she called her friend to tell her all about it. It was kind of interesting to hear mom telling her friend how great it is when mom herself had been so resistant to it in the beginning, but she used that to make the case that it's better than you think! When Dick the little Irish pixie--I mean, the HD Hospice social worker--came out to visit us, we asked him how to assist mom's friend to initiate the contact. Dick told us that cancer is an automatic eligibility for hospice. After Dick left we called mom's friend and told her all about it and gave her the phone number, but neither of us were very optimistic that her friend would follow through.

Today mom called me to tell me that she was totally amazed that her friend actually called them and is already signed up. Mom felt so relieved that her friend can now rely on a little more help. (And once again, my frail little mom takes care of the people around her...)
